Women as Photographer Exhibit

The opening for Women as Photographer exhibit at the Minneapolis Photo Center was wonderful. Over 600 people were there, my photo looked gorgeous, and the music and food were wonderful. The photos in the show were also lovely, and I feel honored to be part of such a great show. It's up until April 17th, and definitely worth checking out if you're in the greater Minneapolis area.

How to Be Happy:
Another Memo to Myself

You start with your own body
then move outward, but not too far.
Never try to please a city, for example.
Nor will the easy intimacy

It is no simple longing for the home town or country of our birth. The emotion is Janus-faced: we are torn between a nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange. On that note, I'm currently reading a book by Frederic Jameson, and he has an essay in it about the Bonaventure Hotel in LA. This essay has escalated my urge to shoot in Southern California.

Needless to say, it's been forever. It seems when I get accustomed to work, friends, loves, life, I tend to forget about other things (ie, this blog).

But I'm back! And I'll try to stay back!

I'm in the process of adding new work to my website, and to this blog. Technology has not been my friend of late, so I've been a bit slow in the whole "putting photos on my computer" thing.

I've been busy working my mundane day (or rather, evening/night) job. I've been endlessly searching for more employment and a new apartment. Luckily, I found the latter.

I'm also in the process of getting ready for my first international show! I got into this photography show in Chianciano, Italy. My good friend Lindsay Chandler is coming with me for the week-long exhibit/workshop extravaganza. First, I have to figure out the increasingly stressful process of shipping my photographs to Italy. Sigh.

Otherwise, I'm just hanging in, day by day. Philadelphia's filthy hot in the summer. My digital camera is slowly becoming my friend again. Dreams of a Tuscan countryside fill my mind daily. Things are pretty good.

More more interesting things to come.

on loneliness

The ideas from my undergrad thesis were largely about loneliness and my inability to properly explain and define what that word has meant to me throughout my life. Our loneliness--both as individuals and as members of a larger society--still interests me greatly, so I was quite happy to come across this interview from The Believer magazine. There are a lot of interesting ideas discussed, and I now feel a bit more inspired today.

The other day I was talking to a good friend about impending feelings of depression, loneliness, and fear. She was saying that when she feels depressed, showering helps for some reason. We then began to talk about the things that help ease bad emotions in the immediate present, even though they're usually just physical distractions. It was then decided that instead of trying stave off such uncomfortable and upsetting emotions, one should maybe just embrace them, work through them, and generally just let them out. Maybe the relentless struggle to distract oneself and "get over" these feelings really just amplifies them in an unconstructive way.

The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center opens its doors on Tuesday, August 11. This place is a much-needed establishment for Philadelphia photographers, artists, and appreciators. Check out the space in person (it's beautiful!) or peruse the website. You should also read this article in the Philadelphia Weekly about PPAC. And most of all, give Sarah Stolfa a big hand for creating such a great organization!

Come mid-August, you can see my photographs Anterior Future and Fall in the inaugural show at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center. The show, "NEXT: Emerging Philadelphia Photographers," will be exhibited from August 8th through November 29th, 2009.

Throughout August and September, you can check out smaller versions of my photographs on view at the Green Line Cafe here in West Philadelphia. The Green Line is located at 45th and Locust Streets.
